Staple line leaks are a significant source of morbidity and death in bariatric surgery. For decades, surgical staplers have been used to split and approximate tissue. Overall, surgical staplers have relatively low failure rates, but occurrences might include failure to sepsis, bleeding, locked handles, and other issues. Many skilled surgeons have had similar experiences in their careers. Patients may eventually pay the price for these flaws in the form of significant problems like bleeding or leakage.
