As with any major procedure, bariatric surgery poses potential health risks, both within the short term and the long term. Bariatric surgery is regarded as an intermediate- to high-risk noncardiac surgery because of the significant medical comorbidities and procedure-related hazards that are associated with it.
The most remarkable effect of bariatric surgery is the complete and rapid remission of type 2 diabetes mellitus, a disease that was previously assumed to be irreversibly progressive and minimally responsive to therapies except for a few demanding and unrealistic protocols. Diabetes remains our most complex and costly disease, despite various medical advances. Diabetes, which is growing faster than any other chronic disease, now affects more than 24 million Americans and is the leading cause of blindness, renal failure, and amputations in the United States, as well as a major cause of heart disease and stroke.
Severe obesity affects almost every system of the human body, resulting in a wide range of serious diseases such as pseudotumor cerebri, hypertension, diabetes, renal failure, immunocompetence, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiac failure, atherosclerosis, Pickwickian syndrome, arthritis of the weight-bearing joints, infertility, skin breakdown, and an increased prevalence of cancers, particularly colon, prostate, and breast cancer.
