The results of registry-based population studies were evaluated in this study to determine the effect of bariatric surgery on cancer incidence at the population level. Pooled odds ratios (POR) for the occurrence of cancer following bariatric surgery compared to controls were calculated using a meta-analysis of relevant papers. Obesity is thought to be a risk factor for several forms of cancer, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Bariatric surgery has been linked to decreases in obesity-related co-morbidities as well as a total cancer risk. However, given the inconsistent results of various cohort studies, the influence of bariatric surgery on CRC risk appears to be debatable. Furthermore, CRC biomarker measurements after ROUX-EN-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) demonstrated hyperproliferation and elevated proinflammatory gene expression in the rectal mucosa. Alterations in the gut microbiota and exposure of the colorectum to high amounts of bile acids are postulated processes leading to increased CRC risk, both of which are produced by RYGB-induced anatomical rearrangements.
