Biography

Dr. Alberto R Ferreres, MD, Ph.D., JD, MPH, FACS (Hon.) received his medical degree “summa cum laude” from the University of Buenos Aires in 1979 and his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the same institution in 1987. He trained in general surgery and surgical oncology at the University of Buenos Aires from 1980 to 1987. He completed a Master of Public Health from Salvador University, Buenos Aires, in 1995, a Masters in Health Administration in 1996, from Austral University, Buenos Aires as well as a Fellowship in Patient Safety and Medical Error (Virginia Commonwealth University, 1997) and a Fellowship in Clinical Ethics at the University of Chicago McLean Center for Medical Ethics in 2010. Professor Ferreres was an International Guest Scholar of the ACS in 1991. He is presently a Full Professor of Surgery at the University of Buenos Aires and Chair Department of General Surgery at Dr. Carlos A Bocalandro Hospital. He has a focus on Surgical Ethics, sitting at the ACS Committee on Ethics and serving as Editor in Chief for the College’s Textbook “Issues in Surgical Ethics”. He also holds an appointment as a Professor of Surgery and Ethics at the University of Washington Department of Surgery (Seattle, WA) where he runs the Surgical Ethics Program. Besides, Prof. Ferreres holds Honorary Fellowships from the American Surgical Association and the American College of Surgeons as well as from the North Pacific Surgical Association, the Brazilian College of Digestive Surgery, the Brazilian Surgical Society, the Surgical Association of Chile and Ecuador, the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Chinese College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, among others. He is the Past President of the ACS Argentine Chapter and its current Governor, Past President of the International Society of Digestive Surgery (ISDS), the Argentine Society of Medical Humanism, and the Argentine Surgical Academy. He has served on different committees at the ACS, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). He has lectured extensively around the world and has been distinguished as Visiting Professor in Europe and the USA. Prof. Ferreres is a gastrointestinal surgeon with a focus on minimally invasive surgery and with an interest in Surgical Ethics, Public Health, and professional liability issues. He is the author of 4 textbooks, 30 book chapters, and more than 100 contributions to medical literature. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Annals of Surgery, JAMA Surgery, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, American Journal of Surgery, and the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
